It’s all fright on the night
(c) Glin Castle

Glin Castle

This splendid old hotel is tucked away in a green and pleasant corner of County Limerick in western Ireland. The owners, the FitzGeralds, have a history of duelling, gambling and womanising so it’s unsurprising they feature a brace of healthy spooks here.

Ghosts & ghouls: Henry is usually seen on the stairs where unfortunately he had the ceiling fall on him some centuries ago, splattering him on the floor. According to those who see him, he doesn’t look pleased.

There’s also a poltergeist on the top floor that clatters about, frightening the odd guest, and occasionally a 19th century knight (a louche gambler) can be seen watching television. He particularly likes Antiques Roadshow, apparently.

Bumps in the night: B&B doubles cost from £190. Glin Castle, Glin, Limerick,Ireland (00 353 68 34173, www.glincastle.com).
